“A” Side Qualifying Games Set
Team Mike McEwen (Fort Rouge), playing without their skip who is under the weather, and Team Reid Carruthers (West St. Paul) have won their second games of the 2018 Viterra Championship in Winkler.
The top two seeds in the event both scored eleven points enroute to games on the Friday early draw. A third victory will move them along to the eight-team playoff round.
Team McEwen led 7-3 after four ends in their 11-6 victory over Richard Muntain (Pinawa). Carruthers was even more dominant, leading 8-0 after three ends in an 11-1 victory over Terry McNamee (Brandon).
The other three winners on the noon draw have also advanced to the “A” Side qualifying games.
McEwen will play Dennis Bohn (Assiniboine Memorial) after Bohn’s 9-7 win over Kyle Foster (Arborg). Bohn’s victory was sealed with a takeout past a tight centre guard for a double kill and a score of three coming home.
Carruthers will play David Bohn (Assiniboine Memorial) who defeated Julien Leduc (Granite) 7-3.
Travis Bale (Fort Rouge) was also a noon draw winner, posting a 9-3 win over Darryl Friesen (St. Vital). Bale will play Daniel Birchard (Pembina) after Birchard posted an upset win early Thursday over Jason Gunnlaugson (Granite).
In the fourth Friday morning qualifying game, Pat Simmons (Granite) will play William Lyburn (Assiniboine Memorial).
“B” Side competition continues on the 4pm draw at Winkler’s Centennial Arena.
