Reigning Manitoba Senior champion Dave Boehmer (Petersfield) will begin the quest for a fifth Manitoba senior title when the Strathcona Trust Senior Men’s gets underway at 9:00AM on Thursday, March 21 at Heather Curling Club.
Boehmer returns with the same team which won the championship a year ago: Dale Lott, Sean Bracken, and George Hacking. Hacking was with Boehmer when they won in 2018, 2019, and 2020 so Hacking is also chasing a fifth senior title.
The quest for five senior championships also extends to the La Salle team of Randy Neufeld. Neufeld, Dean Moxham, Peter Nicholls, and Dale Michie all won the 2015, 2016, 2021, and 2022 Manitoba Senior titles.
With the Brandon team of Murray Warren, his brothers Terry and Reg, and Brian Barker also in the field, the last nine Manitoba champions are all represented in the upcoming championship at the Heather CC.
The championship includes 16 teams playing in a pair of eight team pools. They will play to a 4-team Page Playoff with the final game at 1:00PM Monday.
The Strathcona Senior Men’s includes four Granite teams and two from Brandon. There is a single team from each of Baldur, Beausejour, Burntwood, Charleswood, Fort Rouge, Hamiota, La Salle, Minnedosa, Petersfield and Stonewall.
Five past champion skips, including defending champion Joelle Brown, are included among the 10 teams who will compete in the Pharmasave Senior Women’s Provincial Championship at Winnipeg’s Heather Curling Club, March 20-24.
Brown’s Fort Rouge team includes Maureen Bonar, Allyson Bell, and Natalie Claude, all returning after last year’s success.
Terry Ursel (Arden) skipped the 2017, 2019, and 2020 champion teams which also included lead Tracy Igonia. Kim Link (East St. Paul) returns with a line-up almost identical to the champion team of 2021. Laurie Deprez (Stonewall) skipped the 2012 champion team which also included third Laurie Ellwood.
Sandra Cowling, who skipped the 2016 champion team from Hamiota, returns as lead for the Kathy Isaac entry.
Preparing for the Senior Championship, Patti Ulrich (St. Vital) and her team recently won the gold medal in the Manitoba Senior Games Women 55+ Division.
The Pharmasave Senior Women’s starts Thursday March 21 at 12:30PM and will be played in round-robin format in two five-team pools. The first draw of the 4-team Page Playoff will be at 7:30PM, Saturday, March 23. The final at Heather will be at 4:00PM Sunday.
Three St. Vital teams in the Pharmasave Senior Women’s are joined by two from Fort Rouge and East St. Paul, and one each from Arden, Hamiota, and Stonewall.
The winners of the Pharmasave Senior Women’s and the Strathcona Trust Senior Men’s will have the opportunity to represent Manitoba at the National Seniors, December 1-7, 2024, at Curl Moncton, Moncton, NB
