September 25, 2019 — CurlManitoba has announced that TELUS will be the title sponsor of Manitoba’s Provincial Junior Curling Championships in Dauphin in January of 2020. The event will be hosted by Dauphin Junior Curling, with the support of Dauphin Curling Club and in partnership with Dauphin Recreation Services.
“We are delighted that TELUS is continuing its sponsorship this season to become our junior competition’s title sponsor,” says CurlManitoba Executive Director Craig Baker.
Through the early berth bonspiels last spring, four teams (two in each of junior men’s and junior women’s) have already qualified for TELUS Junior Championship play in Dauphin, December 31, 2019 to January 5, 2020. Fourteen more junior men’s and junior women’s teams will be identified through qualifying events scheduled through the coming curling season.
One team for each of the championships will be identified in late September through the Larry Jones Classic Bonspiel with a berth at St. Vital (September 26-29, 2019).
Following that two more will qualify for each championship through the TELUS Junior Berth Bonspiel in Beausejour (November 21-24, 2019). The highest ranking eligible team of each gender from the Manitoba Junior Curling Tour following the MJCT Tour Championship will also earn an invitation to compete in Dauphin.
Regional qualifying from December 6-9, 2019 will assign ten championship berths in each of the two championships.
The four teams already qualified are:
Junior Men: Skip Ryan Wiebe with Carter Watkins, Sean Flatt, Adam Flatt, and coach Tom Clasper
Junior Men: Skip Jacques Gautier with Brayden Payette, Jordon Peters, Zack Bilawka, and coach John Lund
Junior Women: Skip Serena Gray-Withers with Kathryn Cullen, Brianna Cullen, and Lane Prokopowich
Junior Women: Skip Meghan Walter with Morgan Reimer, Lauryn Kuzyk, Mackenzie Elias, and coach Frank Walter
“As we welcome TELUS as our new title sponsor, we want to acknowledge with appreciation the nine year junior sponsorship of Manitoba Canola Growers. We have valued our relationship with the Canola Growers and respect their decision to reallocate limited resources at this time,” says Baker. “We look forward to developing the same strong relationship between TELUS and Manitoba curling.”
