Four Teams a Win Away from the Page Playoffs
The eight-team playoff round, the second stage of the 2018 Viterra Men’s Curling Championship, got underway on the Friday evening draw at Winkler’s Centennial Arena.
Defending champion Mike McEwen’s team from the Fort Rouge, continued play without their skip on this draw. They played Steve Irwin (Brandon), with McEwen posting an 8-2 victory.
#2 seed Reid Carruthers (West St. Paul) took on Daniel Birchard (Pembina). Carruthers stole a point in ends 2 though 5 and another 3 in the 6th end enroute to a 8-0 win.
4th seed Pat Simmons (Granite) was matched with Canadian Junior Men’s silver medalist JT Ryan (Assiniboine). The game saw Ryan take 4 in end 8, which sealed a 9-5 victory.
In the fourth game, Travis Bale (Fort Rouge) played David Bohn (Assiniboine). Bale scored a 3 in end 4 which helped his team in their 6-2 win over Bohn,
On the 9am draw Saturday morning, Carruthers (West St. Paul) will play Bale (Fort Rouge) and McEwen will play JT Ryan. The winners of these two games will advance to the 1-2 game of the Championship Page Playoff. The other two Page Playoff qualifiers will be determined on the 2pm draw with the first games in the Championship round scheduled for 6pm.
