Three Win Day Has Defending Champions a Win Away from Viterra Page Playoff
Three wins on Friday have Reid Carruthers and his defending champion West St. Paul team, skipped by Mike McEwen, a win away from a berth in the Viterra Championship Page Playoff.
The first two teams will advance to the 2019 Viterra Championship page playoff when Jason Gunnlaugson (Morris) plays Braden Calvert (Assiniboine Memorial) and Corey Chambers (Lorette) takes on the Reid Carruthers/Mike McEwen foursome at 9am Saturday morning in Virden with the winners advancing.
As A-Side qualifiers Gunnlaugson, Calvert, and Chambers all won a pair of games Friday to advance. Coming from the B-Side of the draw, the Carruthers/McEwen squad won three games Friday.
On the late draw Friday, Gunnlaugson advanced with an 8-2 playoff round win over William Lyburn (Granite); Calvert blanked David Bohn (Assiniboine Memorial) 8-0; Chambers beat Steen Sigurdson (Gimli) 6-2; and Carruthers/McEwen defeated Tanner Lott (Winnipeg Beach) 9-7.
Here’s how the teams advanced to the double knock-out Playoff Round which began Friday evening. The first four teams qualified on the early morning draw Friday, all completing a three game sweep to the next stage.
#2 seed Gunnlaugson defeated Ryan Thomson (Morden) 6-3, his first of two losses on the day.
#3 seed Calvert moved Lyburn to the B-Side with a 10-5 win.
#4 seed Lott (Winnipeg Beach) handed #5 Dennis Bohn (Assiniboine Memorial) his first of two losses on Friday, a 7-6 win for Lott.
And Chambers, with a 6-4 victory over Terry McNamee (Brandon), gave McNamee his first loss of two on Friday.
On the B-Side of the draw, the top seeded Carruthers/McEwen team qualified with a pair of B-Side wins Friday, 10-0 over Ty Dilello (Fort Rouge) and a ‘revenge’ win over McNamee, who had beaten them earlier in the week.
Sigurdson qualified with two Friday victories, 6-5 over Daniel Birchard (Pembina) and 7-5 over Dennis Bohn.
Lyburn advanced with a Friday win 8-3 over Trevor Loreth (Granite) after losing the early A-Side game to Calvert,
David Bohn scored an extra end 6-3 victory over Thomson following an earlier 7-4 win over Steve Irwin (Brandon).
