The 2022 Manitoba’s Credit Unions Master Men’s and Women’s Provincial Championship was held at the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club in Winnipeg, MB from April 6-10, 2022. Sixteen men’s teams competed in a two group 8 team round robin format. There were five Master Women’s teams that also competed in a round robin.
The women’s round robin was completed on Saturday. Three teams finished the round robin with 3-1 records. Judy Colwell’s team from the East St. Paul Curling Club earned a bye to the final based on their Last Stone Draw totals. Sandra Cowling (Hamiota) and Laurie Deprez (Stonewall) played the semi-final on Sunday morning. The Cowling team earned their spot in the finals with an 8-5 win over the team from Stonewall. The final was a back and forth battle until the Judy Colwell and her team of Wendy Nykoluk, Donna Smiley, Leslie Brown and fifth Debbie Palson ran Sandra’s team out of rocks in the eighth end, winning 8-6.
In the men’s competition, Murray Warren (Brandon) and Greg McGibbon’s (Granite) teams earned a spot in the 1vs1 game by virtue of their undefeated record through round robin play. Mark Franklin and his Granite team and Gord McTavish’s Pembina team earned the chance to play in the 3vs4 game with their 6-1 records in the round robin. It was Murray Warren and his team that prevailed in the 1vs1 game, winning 8-6, and moved directly to the final. Greg McGibbon played against Mark Franklin, who had defeated the McTavish team 6-5 in an extra end in the semi-final. The final game was a very close game with Team Warren stealing a point in the extra end to win over Mark Franklin 6-4.
Both men’s and women’s winners will represent Manitoba in November 2022 at the National Masters Championship being held at the Pembina Curling Club in Winnipeg.
