CurlManitoba has announced the extension of the annual Pat Spiring Award to become a
province-wide Manitoba Curling award which recognizes a combination of competitiveness,
sportsmanship, and sport leadership.
Curling clubs across Manitoba are invited to submit letters of nomination for competitor-leaders
in their club for the award which will be presented annually at the Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame
& Museum banquet.
The Pat Spiring Award has been presented for the past decade at the Manitoba Men’s
Championship, to a recipient selected by the competitors, recognizing the competitive spirit, love
of the game, respect for the tradition and spirit of the sport of curling and on ice ability which
were all part of Pat’s character. Originally presented by CurlManitoba with the support of the
Spiring family, the award will continue with the combined sponsorship of CurlManitoba,
Wellington-Altus, and the Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame & Museum.
“His fellow competitors knew Pat Spiring as a person who loved the game and loved the true
spirit of the game. He was a great player who was very competitive but who respected the
traditions and sportsmanship that have always been a part of the game,” says Craig Baker,
Executive Director of CurlManitoba. “They also believe that he would have become a leader in
the sport, perhaps in his club, perhaps beyond the club level.”
The desire to continue to recognize the competitiveness, the dedication to the spirit of the game
and the tradition of sportsmanship and also recognize the idea that Pat Spiring would have
become a leader of the sport are combined in the re-defined Pat Spiring Award.
Curlers are encouraged to suggest names to their club executive. Manitoba curling club
executives are asked to propose the names of worthy male or female candidates, at least 40
years of age, who have:
• Competed in a provincial championship at the Men/Women, Senior, Masters, Mixed
or Club Champions level within the last five years OR who have been a competitor
in regional playdowns (in the same competitions) at least three times in the past five
years.
• Made a significant leadership contribution as a volunteer at the local club or
provincial (or beyond) level for at least three consecutive years in the past five
years. This may be as a committee leader or as a Board member but specifically
excludes one-time major event volunteer activity.
