Brandon University Honours for Three Manitoba Curling Champions
A trio of Manitoba curling champions were inducted into the Brandon University Sports Wall of Fame Saturday, October 14.
Ron Westcott, Karen Dunbar, and (posthumously) Neil Andrews were honoured.
Manitoba Senior and Masters champion and Canadian Masters champion Ron Westcott played on a Brandon University curling team which won the Brandon Men’s Bonspiel in the late 60’s. The team with a slightly different line-up was the finalist in the western University curling championship in the same year, losing to Ed Lukowich. Westcott was inducted into the Wall of Fame in the Community Leader category.
Westcott’s senior championship teammate Neil Andrews was also inducted in the Community Leader category. Andrews played football at Brandon College prior to his successful curling and sport volunteer career which included both curling and baseball. Andrews, who passed away in 2007, was represented at the ceremony by his wife Heather.
Karen Dunbar, an eight time Manitoba curling champion in Women’s, Seniors and Masters category and a Canadian Masters champion, was inducted into the Wall of Fame as an athlete. Her Brandon University sports career was highlighted by being named Bobcats Women’s basketball MVP three times and BU Athlete of the Year once.
