There was a pair of upsets on the late afternoon draw Wednesday at the Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts presented by Monsanto in Killarney.
Top seeded Jennifer Jones (St Vital) and fourth seed Shannon Birchard (Thistle) both gave up four-enders in losses which set their opening day records at 1-1. Joelle Brown (Charleswood) stole a four on the eighth end in a 9-5 win over Jones while Lisa Hale-Menard (Dauphiin scored fours on both the fourth and eighth ends to beat Birchard 10-4.
In other games, Brianne Meilleur (Fort Rouge) beat Jennifer Briscoe (Burntwood) 10-3 and Kristy Watling (Fort Rouge) defeated Alyssa Calvert 8-5.
It was a rare day in round robin play as all eight teams in the Asham Black Pool ended the day with equal 1-1 records.
On the late draw, results were more to form. Second seed Kerri Einarson (East St. Paul) was a 7-4 winner over Tiffany McLean (Brandon) and third seeded Darcy Robertson (Assiniboine Memorial) beat Mackenzie Zacharias (Altona) 8-2.
Einarson and Robertson finished day one of the championship with 2-0 records along with Barb Spencer (Assiniboine Memorial) who was a 9-5 victor over Rebecca Lamb (Stonewall).
Jennifer Clark-Rouire (Miami) won her game with Cheryl Reed (Brandon) by an 8-6 score.
