Carruthers Awaits Winner of Ryan-McEwen Sunday Morning Match
Reid Carruthers and his 2015 Manitoba champion team from West St. Paul (Braeden Moskowy, Derek Samagalski, Colin Hodgson) have advanced to the Sunday afternoon provincial final at the 2018 Viterra Championship
Carruthers defeated Team Mike McEwen (Fort Rouge) Saturday evening in Winkler by a 7-3 score. Still playing with three due to Mike McEwen’s illness, Team McEwen fell behind 4-1 after four ends and were unable to mount a challenge the rest of the way.
The McEwen foursome falls to the Sunday morning semi-final where the defending men’s champions will take on the reigning Manitoba junior champion JT Ryan team from Assiniboine Memorial.
Ryan and Brandon’s Steve Irwin were tied 3-3 after eight ends and Ryan was slightly heavy on a last rock draw to score only one on the ninth. Team Ryan played a near-perfect tenth, leaving Irwin only a last shot angle raise takeout on a Ryan shot rock buried in the four foot. Irwin over-curled leaving Ryan a steal of one and a 5-3 win.
The Ryan McEwen game goes at 8:30am Sunday in the Winkler Centennial Arena. The winner advances to the provincial final game at 3pm against Team Carruthers.
