Top Five Seeds 2-0 after Opening Day at the Scotties in Gimli
The top five seeds in the Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts presented by Bayer, underway in Gimli, all completed their opening day with a pair of victories.
Among the five, only #4 seed Allison Flaxey was seriously tested on the first day of play. On the late draw trailing Joelle Brown (Charleswood) by two coming home, Flaxey and her Granite foursome scored a three to mark up their second win of the day.
With Flaxey at 2-0 after the first day of play are #1 Kerri Einarson (Gimli) with a late draw 10-0 win over Rebecca Lamb (Stonewall); #2 Tracy Fleury (East St. Paul), an 8-2 evening winner over Laura Burtnyk (Assiniboine Memorial); #3 Darcy Robertson (Assiniboine Memorial), a 10-4 late game winner over Tiffany McLean (Brandon); and #5 Beth Peterson (Assiniboine Memorial) with 12 – 2 win over Lisa Hale (Dauphin) in their second game of the day.
Six teams ended the first day with a win and a loss.
Team Hale had won their opener so the late game loss gave them a 1-1 record along with Alyssa Calvert (Brandon) and Kristy Watling (Fort Rouge) who ended the first day of play with 1-1 records after an evening 7-3 Calvert win over Watling. After losing their early game, Abby Ackland (Assiniboine Memorial) bounced back to defeat clubmate Barb Spencer (Assiniboine Memorial) 9-7 to give Team Ackland a split of their first two.
Terry Ursel (Arden/Lansdowne) and Jennifer Clark-Rouire (Miami) are also at 1-1 after Team Ursel’s late 8-6 win over Clark-Rouire.
Spencer, Brown, Lamb, Burtnyk and McLean were all winless on opening day in Gimli.
Play continues at the Gimli Recreation Centre with Thursday games at 8:30am, 12:15pm, 4pm and 7:45pm.
