Second Viterra Wins for Lyburn, Simmons
After surviving an extra-end thriller on opening day at the Viterra Championship in Winkler, #5 seed William Lyburn and his Assiniboine Memorial team were first off the ice Thursday morning.
The extra end stolen victory Wednesday over young Brett Walter (Elmwood) may have served as a wake-up call for Team Lyburn as they opened with a three on the second end against Tyler Drews (Fort Rouge) and finished with a stolen three on the ninth to win the morning game 10-4.
Fourth seed Pat Simmons (Granite), with a 6-3 win over Randy Neufeld (LaSalle), also posted his second victory.
Third seed Jason Gunnlaugson (Granite) was defeated 8-5 by Daniel Birchard (Pembina) as Birchard also advanced on the “A” side of the qualifying round.
On the “B”Side, two more team lost their second game and are eliminated from the event.
Steve Irwin (Brandon) defeated Brett Walter 9-4 and Andrew Wickman (Fort Rouge) beat Brandon Radford (Swan River) 7-4 to send Walter and Radford home.
The 12:15 draw in Winkler will feature five “A” Side games with top seed Mike McEwen (Fort Rouge) playing Richard Muntain (Pinawa) and #2 Reid Carruthers (West St. Paul) playing Terry McNamee (Brandon).
